Smartphones for Seniors: 5 Features That Can Make Life Easier (and Safer)

Smartphones have come a long way—and today, they’re more than just a way to stay in touch. For seniors, a smartphone can be a powerful tool for safety, health, and connection, especially when it’s set up with the right features.

Whether you’re already using a smartphone or just starting to explore what it can do, this guide is here to help. And if you’d like hands-on support, I’m offering free Senior Smartphone Classes this summer across Volusia County to make learning simple and stress-free.

Let’s take a look at five features that can truly make a difference in daily life for older adults.

1. Emergency Contacts and Medical ID Setup

In a crisis, seconds matter. Most smartphones today come with built-in emergency contact and Medical ID settings that can be accessed even from a locked screen.

Why this matters:

  • First responders can see allergies, medications, and emergency contacts without needing your password.
  • Loved ones can be reached instantly with one tap if you’re in trouble or unable to speak.

How to use it:

  • On iPhones, set up through the Health app.
  • On Androids, look under Settings > Safety & Emergency.

This is one of the first things we cover in our senior tech classes.

2. Medicare and Health Insurance Apps

Did you know there are apps that can help you manage your Medicare benefits right from your phone?

Recommended apps:

  • Medicare.gov app: View your claims, deductibles, and provider information.
  • Carrier-specific apps: Most Medicare Advantage plans (such as Aetna, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, and Florida Blue) offer their own apps where you can:
    • Find in-network providers
    • Access ID cards
    • Track prescription drug coverage
    • Set up appointment reminders

During my classes, I’ll help participants download and navigate these tools, so you always have your plan information at your fingertips.

3. Telehealth Access for Virtual Appointments

Telehealth isn’t just a pandemic trend—it’s a long-term solution that’s here to stay.

Benefits of telehealth:

  • See a doctor without leaving home
  • Avoid exposure to illnesses in waiting rooms
  • Get quick answers to minor health concerns or medication refills

What you need:

  • A smartphone with a camera and internet access
  • A telehealth-capable Medicare plan (many Advantage plans include this)
  • An app or website link to your provider’s portal

I’ll walk you through how to set up a telehealth account, test your camera, and prepare for a virtual visit, even if it’s your first time.

4. Voice Commands and Accessibility Tools

Modern smartphones are built to be intuitive—even if you’re not tech-savvy.

Helpful tools to explore:

  • Voice assistants like Siri or Google Assistant: Make calls, send texts, or ask questions using just your voice
  • Magnification and font size settings for easier reading
  • Hearing aid compatibility and sound amplification settings
  • Reminders and alarms for medications, appointments, or daily tasks

These features can dramatically reduce stress and improve independence—especially for those managing multiple health needs.

5. Navigation and Weather Alerts

Knowing where you’re going—and what the weather’s doing—can be especially important during hurricane season.

Top tools:

  • Google Maps or Apple Maps for turn-by-turn directions with senior-friendly design
  • Local weather apps or emergency alert settings to stay informed during a storm
  • Option to receive push notifications for shelter openings or severe weather warnings

In our workshops, we’ll cover how to install and customize these apps so you always feel informed and prepared.
