Ask A Local Broker: The Biggest Medicare Myths I Hear In Volusia County

Medicare is full of rules, exceptions, and fine print. Over the years, I have sat down with hundreds of seniors in Volusia County, and I hear the same myths come up again and again. Some of these myths can cost people money, while others lead to unnecessary stress. Let’s set the record straight with some quick myth-busting — local style.

Myth One: Medicare Is Free at 65

Many people believe that Medicare is free simply because they paid into the system while working. The truth is Medicare Part A may have no premium if you or your spouse worked long enough, but Part B always has a monthly premium. In 2026, that standard premium is projected to be over 200 dollars.

Myth Two: I Can Enroll Anytime I Want

One of the biggest Medicare myths in Florida is that you can sign up whenever you are ready. In reality, there are strict windows such as the Initial Enrollment Period, Annual Enrollment Period, and Special Enrollment Periods. Missing these deadlines can mean waiting months for coverage and paying lifelong penalties.

Myth Three: All Medicare Advantage Plans Are the Same

In Volusia County alone, there are dozens of Advantage plans, and they are not identical. Networks, copays, dental and vision extras, and even drug coverage vary from plan to plan. One person in Daytona Beach may save money on a plan that does not work well for a neighbor in Port Orange.

Myth Four: Medicare Covers Long-Term Care

Medicare covers skilled nursing care after a hospital stay, but it does not cover long-term custodial care in an assisted living facility or nursing home. This is a costly misunderstanding that catches many families off guard. Planning ahead with other resources is essential.

Myth Five: If My Doctor Accepts Medicare, They Accept Every Plan

Original Medicare is accepted by most providers nationwide. Medicare Advantage is different. Each Advantage plan has its own network, and just because your doctor accepts one Advantage plan does not mean they accept all of them. Verifying networks every year is critical.

Myth Six: I Don’t Need Drug Coverage if I Don’t Take Medication

Even if you do not take any prescriptions now, you may face a penalty later if you skip Part D coverage. The late enrollment penalty adds to your premium for life once you eventually enroll. It is usually smarter to take a low-cost plan to avoid future penalties.

Volusia County Example

Edna from Ormond Beach thought Medicare would cover her assisted living costs when she needed help with daily activities. She was shocked to learn Medicare only covers skilled medical care, not long-term support. A simple myth ended up creating stress for her family.

FAQs

Q: Does Medicare cover dental, vision, and hearing
A: Original Medicare does not, but many Advantage plans include these extras.

Q: Are Medicare Advantage plans worse than Original Medicare
A: Not at all. It depends on your needs. Advantage plans offer extras and lower premiums but have networks, while Original Medicare with Medigap offers more flexibility.

Q: Can I switch my plan if I’m unhappy
A: Yes, during the Annual Enrollment Period or sometimes through a Special Enrollment Period if you qualify.

Bottom Line

Medicare myths can lead to costly mistakes, but with the right information you can make confident choices. Every county in Florida has unique plan options, so what works for one neighbor may not work for another.
