From Agent to Advocate: Blending Insurance with Community Healing

From Corporate Roots to Independent Wings (My Insurance Journey Since 2017)

I’ve been a licensed health insurance agent since 2017, and what a journey it’s been! I started out working with some of the big names in the industry – think Independence Blue Cross, eHealth, Assurance – learning the ropes and helping people get covered. For five years, I was even a captive agent with Florida Blue, which meant I could only offer Florida Blue’s plans to my clients (no, I wasn’t literally held captive, I promise – but I did become very familiar with all things Florida Blue). Those early years taught me the ins and outs of how insurance companies work, and I soaked up knowledge like a sponge.

In 2024, I decided it was time to spread my wings. I transitioned to being a full-service independent agent, and let me tell you, it’s been liberating. Now I can work with any insurance carrier I choose, which means I can truly put my clients first without any corporate strings attached. I’ve focused on organic lead generation to build my business – that’s a fancy way of saying I meet people through grassroots networking, community events, and good old-fashioned word of mouth rather than buying lists of names from a big database. It’s more work upfront, but it feels authentic. This change wasn’t just a career move; it was a calling. I realized I wanted to do more than just sell policies – I wanted to make a real impact on people’s lives and my community.

(Inspirational sidenote: When you step out on your own after years in a corporate bubble, it’s equal parts exhilarating and terrifying. Kind of like graduating from using water wings to swimming freely. But every story I hear and every person I help reminds me why I chose this path.)*

Independent, Unbiased, and Here to Help

One of the best parts of being an independent agent is that I get to be completely unbiased in my recommendations. I’m not loyal to any one insurance company – I’m loyal to you, the person I’m helping. Over the years I’ve gained deep familiarity with our local healthcare providers and all the major insurance carriers out there. Blue Cross, United, Aetna, Cigna, Humana – you name it, I’ve probably worked with them or pitched their plans. This means when I sit down with someone to discuss coverage, I can pull from a wide array of options and find the right fit for their unique needs. It’s like being a matchmaker, but for people and their health plans.

My approach is all about education and understanding. Health insurance (especially Medicare and individual health plans) can feel like you’re reading a foreign language – deductibles, formularies, networks, oh my! I take pride in breaking things down into plain English and maybe even a simple sketch or two on a notepad. When we work together, my goal isn’t just to get you a policy and rush to the next person. My goal is to make sure you truly understand your coverage. What good is a plan if you don’t know how to use it or what it offers? Whether it’s deciphering the difference between an HMO and PPO, or explaining why that one plan covers your doctor while another doesn’t, I’ve got the patience and the experience to guide you through it.

And yes, I’ll be pragmatic with you. If a plan isn’t in your best interest, I’ll tell you outright. If you could save money by switching to a different option, I’ll point that out, too. Think of me as that honest friend who will kindly let you know if there’s spinach in your teeth – except the “spinach” is an overpriced or ill-fitting insurance plan. In short, no fluff, no bias – just honest help to get you covered by the plan that truly serves you.

Local Roots, National Reach (Florida and Beyond)

I’m a proud Florida native, and my hometown community is the heart of my practice. You’ll often find me volunteering at local events, chatting with folks at the coffee shop about the latest insurance changes, or offering free Q&A sessions at the community center. I love serving the people right here in my backyard – after all, these are my neighbors and family. However, one thing I’ve learned is that life doesn’t always stay put in one place. People move, snowbirds fly south (and back north), and families are spread across the country. That’s why I made sure to get licensed in Florida and a growing list of other states (extensive list in progress!). My reach is expanding steadily – if you have friends or relatives in Georgia, the Carolinas, Texas, or beyond, there’s a good chance I can help them too, or will be able to soon.

Serving Florida means I also know the unique needs of our area. I keep up with the local provider networks – from the big hospital systems to the independent doctors’ groups – and I’m familiar with which insurance carriers play nicely with which providers here. But being multi-state licensed means I’m also well-versed in the nationwide options and nuances. So if you’re a snowbird splitting your year between, say, New York and Florida, I can help make sure your coverage doesn’t fly south for the winter without you. If you decide to retire and relocate closer to grandkids in another state, I can still be the resource you call for guidance. Geography shouldn’t be a barrier to getting good advice.

In essence, I have local roots with a national reach. I focus my day-to-day work in the community I know and love, but I’m only a phone call or Zoom session away for anyone who needs help in a state where I hang my license. It’s the best of both worlds – personal service with broad capability. Wherever you go in life, if I’m licensed there, I want to make sure you feel confidently covered.

Insurance Meets Community: From Chair Yoga to Dance Parties

Here’s a twist you might not expect from your friendly neighborhood insurance agent: I love networking and bringing people together – not just for insurance, but for health, fun, and healing. Over the years, I’ve discovered that I have a bit of a gift for connecting the right people at the right time. Whether it’s introducing a client to a doctor who perfectly suits their needs, or connecting a new retiree in town with a local social club, I get a huge thrill out of networking in the truest sense. It’s like assembling a puzzle where everyone wins in the end.

I’ve taken that passion beyond one-on-one insurance work and into the wider community. In fact, I’ve started partnering with other local businesses and wellness practitioners to host events that promote health and healing in creative (and fun) ways. You might catch me co-sponsoring an arts-and-crafts afternoon at a 55+ community, where residents can come create something beautiful and chat with me informally about any insurance questions. Or perhaps you’ll join us for a lively dance party with a DJ or live music – yes, you read that right, who says insurance agents don’t know how to party? I certainly do, and I love seeing people light up the dance floor without a care (bonus points if they ask me about Medicare during a water break!).

One of my favorite initiatives has been organizing yoga gatherings for seniors. Picture a gentle chair yoga class in the clubhouse, where we’re all stretching, breathing, and smiling. I’m there not in a sales suit, but in yoga pants, maybe handing out a granola bar with my logo stuck to the package. It’s a no-pressure zone – folks can get to know me as a person, enjoy a free wellness activity, and only if they want, pick my brain about their health plans afterward. These events combine my two loves: educating and helping people with insurance and creating spaces where people can connect and improve their well-being.

Why am I doing all this? Because I genuinely believe that this work isn’t just about insurance—it’s about building social skills, community, and healing spaces. Our health is influenced by so much more than just which insurance card we carry. It’s about staying active, staying connected, and finding joy. When people come together – whether to paint, dance, do yoga, or just chat over coffee – they’re improving their health in ways that go beyond what any insurance plan alone can do. (In fact, studies have shown that seniors with active social lives have lower risks of health issues like dementia and heart disease, and even tend to live longer .) If I can play a part in facilitating those connections and moments of joy, while also being the go-to gal for your insurance needs, then I’m fulfilling my mission.

Oh, and did I mention it’s fun? I didn’t become an agent just to fill out paperwork all day. I became an agent to help people live healthier, happier lives. Sometimes that means finding the right health plan; sometimes it means breaking out the salsa music and watching a crowd of 70-year-olds show off their dance moves. In my world, both count as wins.

Join Me: A Call for Connection and Referrals

Now, here’s where you come in, dear reader. I’m on a mission to expand these efforts and I could use a little help from my community. Consider this my call to action – or better yet, a call to collaboration. I truly believe we can create something special together, and it starts with simple connections. Here are a couple of ways you can join me in building this vision:

  • Introduce Me to Community Connectors: Do you know the president of your local HOA, the activities director at a 55+ community, or an event planner who works with senior groups? I would love to meet them! My dream is to bring more arts & crafts workshops, dance parties, and yoga sessions to communities where folks might not otherwise have access to these fun, healthy activities. A warm introduction to the right person could open the door for me to organize a new event that could brighten hundreds of lives (and maybe give a few more people clarity about their insurance in the process). So if a name popped into your head just now – reach out and let’s connect.
  • Send Your Referrals (Friends & Family Welcome!): If you have a friend, parent, neighbor, or that one cousin who always complains about their insurance confusion – send them my way. I’m here to help, whether they’re turning 65 and overwhelmed by Medicare, moving to Florida and need a new plan, or just looking to save money on their current coverage. When you refer someone to me, I promise to treat them like family. No hard sells, no jargon overload – just the honest guidance and support that I’d want for my own loved ones. Your referrals are truly the highest compliment I can receive in this business. They not only help my independent agency thrive, but they also expand this circle of care and community that I’m so passionate about.

In sharing a bit of my story, I hope I’ve painted a picture of why I do what I do. Yes, I help people get insured – but at the end of the day, it’s about so much more than insurance. It’s about community. It’s about making sure no one feels alone or lost when navigating something as important as their health. It’s about creating spaces where we can laugh, learn, dance, and heal together.

So let’s connect. Whether it’s through an insurance consultation, a community event, or a friendly introduction, I’m here for it. Together, we can build a network of care and support that transforms the mundane (like insurance paperwork) into the meaningful (like peace of mind and a sense of belonging).

Thank you for reading my story and for being a part of this journey. Now, let’s get out there and make some magic – be it an insurance miracle or an epic dance-off at the next community social. I’ll see you on the dance floor (or the yoga mat, or the craft table), and hopefully, I’ll see some of your friends there too!
