How to Tell if Your Health Plan is Actually Helping You

Because just having coverage doesn’t mean you’re actually covered.

Let’s face it—health insurance can feel like a maze of fine print, confusing networks, and surprise bills. And while having a health plan is a step in the right direction, having the right plan is what actually helps you.

So how can you tell if your health plan is working for you instead of against you? Here are a few signs to look for:

1. You’re not avoiding care because of cost

If you’re skipping doctor visits, delaying prescriptions, or holding your breath at the pharmacy counter because of sticker shock—that’s a red flag. A good plan helps reduce financial stress, not add to it.

2. Your doctors and specialists are in-network

If you’re constantly finding out that your providers aren’t covered or you’re getting hit with out-of-network fees, your plan might not be aligned with your needs. The right plan should make it easy to keep the care team you trust.

3. You’re taking advantage of benefits beyond the basics

Many people don’t realize their plan includes extras like gym memberships, dental and vision coverage, transportation to appointments, or even grocery and over-the-counter allowances. If you’re not using those perks, it might be because no one explained them—or your plan doesn’t offer them.

4. You understand what you’re paying for

If you don’t know your deductible, your copays, or what your maximum out-of-pocket cost is, you’re not alone. But if you’re constantly confused or blindsided by costs, something needs to change. Education is part of empowerment.

5. You feel supported—not scammed

If navigating your plan feels like trying to solve a riddle while blindfolded, you’re not the problem—the system is. You deserve a guide, not a gatekeeper. That’s where an advocate (like me!) comes in.

Bottom line?

Your health plan should give you access, affordability, and peace of mind.

If it doesn’t, it’s time for a better one.
