Turning 65? Don’t Miss These Medicare Mistakes (Seriously, Don’t)

By Tara Okhovatian, Your Guide to Health, Healing & Not Getting Screwed by the System

Let’s be real—turning 65 comes with some perks. Senior discounts, less small talk, more wisdom, and, yes… the magical moment when you qualify for Medicare.

But here’s the thing no one tells you:

Medicare is not a set-it-and-forget-it situation.

It’s more like building IKEA furniture—if the instructions were in code, and one wrong move could cost you thousands of dollars and a whole lot of sanity.

So let me save you from the most common “oops” moments I see every year, and help you make the most of this milestone—with your wallet, health, and peace of mind intact.

1. Missing Your Enrollment Window

Let’s start with the biggie: you’ve got a 7-month window to enroll penalty-free—3 months before your birthday month, the month of, and 3 months after.

Miss it, and you might owe late penalties… for life.

Yes, you read that right. For. Life.

Pro Tip: Don’t DIY this. Book a call with someone who tracks this stuff like it’s their job. (Oh wait—it is my job.)

2. Thinking Original Medicare Is “Good Enough”

Original Medicare is a great start… but it’s not the whole story. It doesn’t cover prescriptions, dental, vision, hearing, or even max out-of-pocket limits.

It’s like buying a car with no windshield wipers, radio, or seatbelts. You can drive it—but why would you?

Solution: Look into Medicare Advantage or a Supplement plan that covers what you actually need. I’ll walk you through the options—no jargon, no pressure.

3. Taking Advice from Your Cousin’s Barber’s Neighbor

Medicare is not one-size-fits-all. Just because Bob down the street loves his plan doesn’t mean it’s right for you.

Your medications, your doctors, your budget, your zip code—all of that matters. This isn’t a buffet. You need a tailored plate.

Better Idea: Talk to someone (hi!) who actually understands how to match real humans with real plans—not just push paper.

4. Skipping Prescription Drug Coverage “Because You’re Healthy”

Even if you don’t take meds now, skipping Part D can come back to bite you later—with penalties and limited options when you actually do need coverage.

It’s kind of like refusing an umbrella because it’s not raining yet.

Get a plan now, thank yourself later. I’ll help you pick one that doesn’t cost a fortune and still keeps you covered.

5. Assuming All Help Is a Scam

Look, I get it. The health insurance world is full of spammy ads and people with dollar signs in their eyes. That’s exactly why I started Covered by Tara.

I’m not here to sell you something you don’t need. I’m here to help you survive the system and actually feel supported in this next chapter.

If it feels confusing, that’s because it is. But it doesn’t have to be.

Here’s the Bottom Line:

You only turn 65 once. Make it count.

Medicare doesn’t have to be overwhelming, but it does require attention, intention, and a little bit of guidance from someone who’s been around the block. (That’s me.)

Let’s make this next chapter one where you feel secure, covered, and totally in control.

Need help figuring it out?

Let’s talk. It’s free, it’s easy, and it might just save you a lifetime of “I wish I knew.”
