Understanding Medicare Enrollment Periods: A Guide to Making the Right Choice

Medicare can be confusing, especially when it comes to enrollment periods. Knowing when you can enroll or make changes to your plan is crucial to avoiding penalties and ensuring you have the right coverage.

Here’s a breakdown of the three key Medicare enrollment periods you need to know:

1. Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) – October 15 to December 7

This is one of the most well-known enrollment periods, as it’s when most Medicare beneficiaries review and adjust their plans for the upcoming year.

What You Can Do During AEP:

  •  Switch from Original Medicare (Parts A & B) to a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C).
  •  Switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare.
  •  Change from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another.
  •  Enroll in, switch, or drop a Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug) plan.

Who Should Pay Attention?

• Anyone currently enrolled in Medicare who wants to review costs, coverage, and provider networks for the upcoming year.

• Beneficiaries who aren’t satisfied with their current plan and want to explore better options.

Changes made during AEP take effect on January 1 of the following year.

2. Medicare General Enrollment Period (GEP) – January 1 to March 31

This period is for people who missed their Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) and need to sign up for Medicare Part A and/or Part B.

What You Can Do During GEP:

  •  Enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B if you missed your initial opportunity.
  •  Enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan or a Part D drug plan after getting Part A and/or Part B.

Who Should Pay Attention?

• Individuals who did not enroll in Medicare when they were first eligible and need to sign up now.

• People who didn’t have qualifying coverage (like employer health insurance) and need Medicare coverage.

Important: If you enroll during GEP, coverage starts July 1, and you may face late enrollment penalties.

3. Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP) – January 1 to March 31

This period is specifically for people who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan and want to make changes.

What You Can Do During MA OEP:

  •  Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
  •  Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare.
  •  Enroll in a Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug) plan if returning to Original Medicare.

Who Should Pay Attention?

• Medicare Advantage enrollees who are not happy with their current plan and want a better option.

• Those who realized their Medicare Advantage plan isn’t the right fit and prefer Original Medicare.

Changes take effect the first of the following month.
