Yoga for Healing: How Movement Supports Cancer Recovery

Yoga for Healing: How Movement Supports Cancer Recovery

Cancer treatment can take a toll on the body and mind, but gentle movement, breathwork, and mindfulness can play a powerful role in healing. Oncology yoga is a specialized practice designed to support individuals at any stage of their cancer journey—whether in treatment, recovery, or survivorship.

At Covered by Tara, I am passionate about creating opportunities for health and healing in my community. Through free oncology yoga classes, I offer a safe space for individuals affected by cancer to experience the physical, emotional, and mental benefits of yoga.

What Is Oncology Yoga?

Oncology yoga is a modified yoga practice tailored to support the unique needs of individuals undergoing cancer treatment or recovering from it. It is designed to be:

  • Gentle and supportive – Focused on movement that reduces pain, fatigue, and stiffness
  • Breath-centered – Helps ease anxiety, stress, and emotional distress
  • Adaptive for all levels – Can be done seated, standing, or reclined, depending on individual needs
  • Healing-focused – Encourages mind-body awareness, resilience, and deep relaxation

This specialized yoga is not about fitness—it’s about nourishing the body, calming the mind, and fostering well-being.

The Benefits of Yoga for Cancer Recovery

Many cancer survivors and individuals in treatment find that yoga helps improve quality of life. Research supports that oncology yoga can help with:

1. Reducing Fatigue and Increasing Energy

Cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation often lead to chronic fatigue. Gentle yoga movements help:

  • Improve circulation and oxygen flow
  • Increase mobility and flexibility
  • Restore energy levels naturally

Even a short breath-centered yoga practice can boost vitality.

2. Managing Stress, Anxiety, and Depression

A cancer diagnosis and treatment can trigger emotional distress, anxiety, and depression. Yoga encourages:

  • Deep breathing techniques that calm the nervous system
  • Mindfulness practices to reduce negative thoughts
  • Relaxation postures that promote emotional well-being

Regular practice helps create a sense of peace and empowerment.

3. Improving Sleep Quality

Cancer-related fatigue often disrupts sleep. Oncology yoga helps regulate sleep cycles by:

  • Reducing stress hormones
  • Encouraging deep relaxation before bed
  • Promoting better breathing patterns for restful sleep

Many participants report fewer sleep disturbances and improved rest after yoga sessions.

4. Supporting Lymphatic Drainage and Reducing Inflammation

Certain gentle yoga movements and stretches help:

  • Stimulate the lymphatic system, aiding in detoxification
  • Improve circulation, reducing swelling and inflammation
  • Ease neuropathy and stiffness, common side effects of chemotherapy

By promoting healthy movement, yoga supports the body’s natural healing and detoxification process.

5. Enhancing Body Awareness and Self-Compassion

After surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation, many individuals feel disconnected from their bodies. Oncology yoga fosters:

  • Self-acceptance through mindful movement
  • A deeper connection to the body’s healing process
  • A sense of empowerment in one’s recovery journey

Yoga is a safe and nurturing practice that encourages individuals to listen to their bodies and move with compassion.

My Journey with Oncology Yoga

As a certified oncology yoga instructor, I have personally witnessed the transformative power of movement in cancer recovery. I completed my Christina Phipps Foundation oncology yoga training at the Mayo Clinic, where I learned how to support individuals at all stages of their journey.

Through my free community yoga classes, I’ve had the privilege of guiding survivors, caregivers, and individuals in treatment toward greater well-being, inner peace, and healing.

Many participants have shared that yoga has helped them:

  • Regain a sense of control in their bodies
  • Find relief from chronic pain and fatigue
  • Develop a positive mindset toward healing

This is why I am committed to offering accessible yoga for cancer recovery—because everyone deserves the opportunity to heal.
