How to Avoid Medicare Scams: Tips from a Trusted Local Broker
Medicare scams are on the rise—especially during key enrollment periods. Every year, thousands of seniors are targeted by misleading calls, fake mailers, and phishing attempts that can cost them money, peace of mind, and even their Medicare coverage.
As a local, licensed Medicare broker, I’ve seen firsthand how these scams work—and more importantly, how to protect yourself. Here’s what you need to know.
Common Medicare Scams to Watch Out For
1. “Free” Genetic Testing Kits
Scammers may offer you a free DNA or genetic test in exchange for your Medicare number. These are rarely legitimate and often used to bill Medicare fraudulently.
2. Fake Plan Changes
Some callers pretend to be from Medicare or a trusted carrier, claiming you must switch plans or risk losing benefits. They may even spoof phone numbers to appear local.
3. Imposter Agents
Someone may show up at your door or call you claiming to be a Medicare representative—but Medicare will never call you unsolicited or show up without an appointment.
4. Phishing Emails and Texts
If you receive a message asking you to “confirm your Medicare number” or click a suspicious link—delete it. Medicare does not email or text beneficiaries personal requests like this.
How to Protect Yourself
- Never share your Medicare number over the phone unless you initiated the call.
Only give out personal information if you know exactly who you’re speaking with. - Hang up on unsolicited callers.
If someone says they’re calling from Medicare or a health plan and you didn’t request it—just hang up. - Verify any offers with a local, licensed broker.
If something sounds too good to be true, check in with someone you trust—like me. I can help you verify plan options and changes at no cost to you. - Watch your mailbox.
Shred mail that includes your Medicare number. Look out for mailers that try to pressure you with words like “URGENT” or “FINAL NOTICE.”
Report scams.
