What Is the Medicare Savings Program (MSP) and Do You Qualify?

If you’re living on a limited income and struggling to keep up with your Medicare costs, you may be eligible for a Medicare Savings Program (MSP)—a federal and state-funded program that helps cover premiums, deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

Yet many people who qualify never apply. Why? Because they don’t know about it.

As a local Medicare broker, I’m here to help you understand what the MSP is, how it can help, and how to find out if you qualify.

What Is the Medicare Savings Program?

The Medicare Savings Program (MSP) helps low-income Medicare beneficiaries pay for some or all of the following:

  • Part A premiums (hospital insurance)
  • Part B premiums (doctor visits and outpatient care)
  • Deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments

There are four different types of MSPs, depending on your income and assets.

Types of Medicare Savings Programs

1. Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB)

  • Pays Part A & B premiums
  • Covers deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments
  • Extra protection: Providers are not allowed to bill you for Medicare-covered services

2. Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB)

  • Pays your Part B premium only

3. Qualifying Individual (QI)

  • Pays your Part B premium
  • Must reapply each year (first come, first served basis)

4. Qualified Disabled & Working Individuals (QDWI)

  • For certain disabled individuals under age 65 who are working
  • Helps pay the Part A premium

2025 Income & Asset Limits (Estimates)

These limits may vary slightly by state. Florida follows federal guidelines.

ProgramMonthly Income (Single)Monthly Income (Married)Asset Limit (Single)Asset Limit (Married)
QMBUp to ~$1,275Up to ~$1,724~$9,430~$14,130
SLMBUp to ~$1,526Up to ~$2,064~$9,430~$14,130
QIUp to ~$1,715Up to ~$2,320~$9,430~$14,130
QDWIUp to ~$4,945Up to ~$6,659~$4,000~$6,000

Good news: Your home, car, burial plot, and personal belongings do not count toward asset limits.

Bonus: MSP Qualifies You for Extra Help

If you’re approved for any Medicare Savings Program, you also automatically qualify for Extra Help (Low-Income Subsidy), which:

  • Helps pay for prescription drug costs
  • Reduces or eliminates Part D premiums and deductibles
  • Caps your copays at a very low fixed amount

This can result in thousands of dollars in savings each year.

How to Apply for the Medicare Savings Program in Florida

You can apply for the MSP through the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) either:

  • Online through ACCESS Florida
  • By calling the DCF Call Center
  • With help from a local Medicare broker (like me!)

Need assistance? I can help you understand your eligibility, gather paperwork, and apply step-by-step. There’s no cost to work with me.

Let’s See If You Qualify—At No Cost

Many people on fixed incomes qualify for help and don’t realize it. Don’t leave money on the table or struggle with bills you don’t have to pay.
